A San Francisco restaurant recently closed after an influencer shared a viral story online about her interactions with the establishment's chef.

Kis Cafe closed last week, announcing the news in an Instagram post. A TikTok creator named Karla (who doesn't reveal her last name, but goes by @itskarlabb) said the restaurant's chef, Luke Soon, humiliated her during an interaction.

“I'm still in shock and feeling completely exhausted, but I just left the restaurant in tears,” she said in the viral video, which has now been viewed nearly 22 million times.

After the video went viral, Carla's following grew to 400,000, up from 15,000 she says she had previously.

Carla said that while working with the restaurant, Sun, who is also a co-owner of Kis Café, approached her and asked who she was.

When he opened her account, the chef allegedly laughed at Carla's supposed lack of influence.

“This guy opens my TikTok and says I have 15,000 followers,” Carla says in the video. “He was saying I have too [few] followers and that it’s a mistake.”

“He seemed to be implying that my followers couldn't afford to dine at his restaurant.”

“He kept saying that my audience and my followers are not the kind of people that would be in his restaurant,” she continued.

Sun also allegedly asked Carla if she knew who he was and bragged that his daughter had 600,000 followers on social media.

In response, Carla said she “turned red” and left the restaurant.

Her video sparked a backlash, with tens of thousands of users criticizing Kis Café.

“Well, he was right about one thing: your followers won't be going to his restaurant for lunch,” one user wrote.

Another said: “I can't believe follower count has become the new way to show respect. We're human.”

“We strive to create a welcoming and respectful space.”

Announcing its closure on Instagram, Kis Cafe called Sun's behavior “unacceptable.”

“This behavior does not reflect on the rest of our team. We strive to create an environment where everyone is treated with kindness and respect,” the post read.

“In this case, we failed to do that.”

It also said: “We will be closing soon and will be restructuring following these events. In the meantime, we hope to provide a livelihood for our team members and their families.”
