What is Feng Shui Design?

Feng shui is a rapidly gaining momentum in modern society. Just like a horoscope, which many don't know how it works but read or listen to regularly, feng shui , although often unclear, is increasingly being used to bring harmony to their apartments, homes, or offices.

Feng shui originated in China. It's the science and art of harmonizing the space around us to ensure comfortable living and working conditions. This tradition is over 3,000 years old, meaning it's stood the test of time.

If you've had any interest in feng shui, you know there are many different schools and approaches. Which one should you choose? What does each offer? Which method is more effective and easier to use? Should you move the bed? What if it's impossible to move? What if household members have different “favorable directions”? These and similar questions arise for anyone who has delved even slightly into the topic. Your author has explored them and can therefore provide expert answers.

Feng Shui diagnostics

What does a feng shui forecast or feng shui audit, as it's sometimes called (other names include feng shui diagnostics and feng shui analysis), provide? In either case, it's more or less the same thing—designing or reorganizing a space according to feng shui. A consultant takes compass measurements of your home or apartment and carefully examines the house itself, its surroundings, and nearby buildings. A competent consultant will find out the approximate year the house was built and the current status of the residents, if you've lived there for some time. After clarifying all the questions and gathering information, and most importantly, discussing with the client, the consultant begins to construct a so-called space map.

To create a room map, a floor plan of the apartment or house is needed. Based on this, the consultant draws an energy map, which shows the distribution of energies within the apartment or house. What does this energy map reveal? It shows where in the house the zone associated with financial success is located, where, conversely, the zone unfavorable for business is located, and also the zones favorable for family relationships, those “responsible” for health, and so on.

Feng Shui Schools, or How to Choose a Consultant

Some feng shui schools distinguish zones for career, family, health, creativity, wealth, and so on relative to the entrance to a house or apartment, while others define these zones using a compass. However, every home is unique. The shape of the house, the number of floors, and its orientation to the cardinal directions all play a role, and these factors are particularly taken into account in the Flying Stars approach. When choosing a consultant, ask them which school they belong to; a professional consultant typically has experience working in several feng shui schools. The most promising and trusted are the Form School and the already mentioned Flying Stars School, due to their meticulous and comprehensive measurements, taking into account the characteristics of both the home and the personalities of its inhabitants.

In addition to the energy map of the apartment or house, the consultant must provide a report—a description with explanations for all zones of the apartment. What kind of explanations will you see? This also greatly depends on the consultant's school of thought. At the “Flying Stars” school, you'll receive recommendations on colors, materials, furniture shapes, and finishing materials (if necessary), as well as the purpose of the rooms and the optimal use of each zone in the apartment or house. If remodeling is necessary, the consultant will suggest the most daring, yet reliable and most gentle option, so the client can choose the one they prefer. A list of corrective measures is also included to neutralize unfavorable zones.

Apartment renovation according to Feng Shui

The most convenient time to conduct a feng shui diagnosis (or feng shui design) is before or at the beginning of a renovation. At this stage, an energy map of your apartment or house will be more helpful than ever: it will help you learn how to renovate your apartment so that it promotes harmony among all household members, ensures a healthy family, and ensures everyone's health. If there are any problematic areas in the apartment, the consultant will suggest ways to neutralize or block them. At the same time, the consultant's recommendations may provide the missing link in your design: from the description, you will “see” your apartment or house in specific colors, materials, and furniture shapes and sizes will also be suggested. This will reduce the amount of time spent pondering how to make your home even more beautiful and cozy, and will also help you provide the most precise instructions to the renovation workers.

If you're working with a designer, a feng shui consultant will highlight key design considerations. However, most people don't often seek the help of a design professional—it's quite expensive. In this case, a feng shui specialist can help you improve the appearance of your home so you'll feel comfortable. And that's what matters most—living well in your home!
