Hidden Signs of Liquid Water Ocean Discovered Deep Below Mars' Surface

Seismic data suggests there may be a hidden ocean of liquid water beneath the surface of Mars.

Seismic wave records from deep within the Red Planet suggest that there may be a layer of liquid water within Martian rocks at depths of 3.4 to 5 miles [5.4 to 8 kilometers], according to a new paper published April 25 in the journal National Science Review.

The researchers estimate that the total volume of hidden water could cover the entire surface of Mars, forming an ocean 1,700 to 2,560 feet [520 to 780 meters] deep, roughly the same volume of liquid found in the Antarctic ice sheet.
