Motorist finds ‘mystery’ button in car as drivers issue warning

A man has taken to social media to ask for help after discovering a mysterious button in his new car – and fellow drivers have warned him not to press it.

Purchasing a new car is always exciting, particularly if you’ve been saving up for months. But it often takes some time to familiarise yourself with the new vehicle and understand the functions of all the different buttons.

One man found himself baffled after purchasing a Peugeot as he couldn’t decipher the purpose of one particular button. The mysterious icon displayed a car with what appeared to be Wi-Fi bars in the centre, accompanied by the word ‘OFF’ underneath.

In search of answers, he turned to Reddit, asking: “Just bought a new car. What does this button do? I could not find anything on the internet.”

In response to his query, one user joked: “Makes the car into a Wi-Fi router.” Another user humorously suggested: “Microwaves all the occupants in an emergency.”

A third chimed in with: “Internal thermonuclear device. It explodes everything inside the cabin. But it is safe for those outside.” Another user proposed: “Automatic pizza cutter.” Yet another user quipped: “Ejector seat.”

It appears he isn’t alone in his confusion over the strange button, as another social media user queried on a Peugeot forum: “I just got myself a 2014 Peugeot 308 and have found a button on the dash and I have no idea as to what it does?

“It’s to the right of the steering wheel. To me it looks maybe like some kind of radar detection maybe, so mobile speed camera or something. Can anyone shed some light on what it does as I was hoping if I pressed it, it would come up on the centre console screen what it does but nothing happens.”

One knowledgeable user provided the correct explanation, saying: “I think you press that to turn off the volumetric alarm when locking the car so that if for example you have left a dog in the car it won’t set the alarm off. You press it just before getting out and locking the car.”

Another chimed in with additional details: “It’s the ultrasonic alarm sensor disable button. 1) Switch the ignition OFF. 2) Press and hold the button in, the LED will come on and stay on. 3) Deadlock the car as normal – the interior ultrasonic alarm sensors are deactivated and the LED will revert to its normal flashing mode for the alarm system. You have to repeat this every time you wish to lock the car with the alarm system armed but the ultrasonic sensors disabled.”
