A free iPhone update is coming soon, but only if your device is on this list

Apple has begun beta testing a new version of its Apple Intelligence update, which means a global release could be coming soon.

Some iPhone users will soon be able to take advantage of a significant free update that is one of Apple's biggest releases in years. The US tech giant appears to be preparing to roll out its Apple Intelligence boost to millions of devices worldwide, with the latest version now available for developers to test.

Apple Intelligence was first unveiled back in June at the annual WWDC developer conference in Apple Park, Cupertino. Since then, fans have been eagerly awaiting the release date, and it seems like that moment is getting closer. It has just been revealed that the beta versions of iOS, iPadOS, and MacOS have officially been released, which means that users can expect new features in the coming months.

For those unfamiliar with the latest tech buzzwords, beta software is provided to developers to test whether their apps and services are in line with emerging trends.

Apple never gives a precise date for the global launch of its software products, but Mirror Online suggests they could appear on iPhones around Christmas or early 2025.

What is Apple Intelligence and what devices is it compatible with?

Apple Intelligence offers a host of new features, including the ability to review and compose emails, change the tone of your messages, and even clean out your inbox to prioritize the most important emails. The system will also track important details, such as your flight information, to ensure that relevant emails are visible on the day of travel.

Users who love sending endless text messages will also be able to create so-called Genmojis. These unique emojis will appear when you type a simple description. For example, type “fluffy cat in a party hat” and you will get the corresponding emoji.

If you're not very good at editing photos, Apple Intelligence has you covered with the new Clean Up tool. It automatically removes unwanted people or objects that could ruin your family photos. The whole process is seamless and doesn't require any Photoshop skills.

That's not the only intelligent feature for photos. Apple Intelligence also includes a new Image Playground option that will create custom images based on a text description. You can ask to create an image of a friend on the moon or a family member on a surfboard, and the system will fulfill your request.

Another useful update is the Image Wand feature, which can transform a rough sketch into a detailed image, enriching your notes and making them more visual.

Siri is also getting more powerful, allowing it to understand you even when you're stumbling and help you learn information about your device, such as how to send an invisible message or reset your AirTags.

The latest update is Siri integration with ChatGPT, which will allow Siri to provide answers to questions when Siri determines that ChatGPT can provide a useful answer. It also adds a Compose feature, which lets you ask ChatGPT to create original content from scratch directly from the system-wide writing tools.

What devices is it available on?

Unfortunately, not all Apple devices will be able to take advantage of Apple Intelligence, and it will require entirely new hardware to use.

Here is a complete list of compatible devices.

iPhone 16, iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, and iPad and Mac models with the M1 chip or later — also supported for the new iPad mini with the A17 chip.

“We’re excited to introduce the next chapter of Apple innovation. Apple Intelligence will transform what customers can do with our products, and what our products can do for customers,” said Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO.

“Our unique approach combines generative AI with a user’s personal context to deliver truly useful intelligence. And it can access this information completely privately and securely, helping users focus on what matters most to them. This is the kind of AI only Apple can deliver, and we can’t wait for users to experience its capabilities.”
