A new quantum computing benchmark has revealed both the strengths and weaknesses of several quantum processing units (QPUs).

Benchmarking tests conducted by a team from the Jülich Research Center in Germany compared 19 different quantum processors from five companies, including IBM, Quantinuum, IonQ, Rigetti and IQM, to determine which chips are more stable and reliable for high-performance computing (HPC).

These quantum systems were tested with both different “widths” (the total number of qubits) and different “depths” for the 2-qubit gates. Gates represent operations that act on two entangled qubits simultaneously, and depth refers to the length of the circuit — in other words, its complexity and execution time.
