New research confirms fossilised remains of Germany's 'most amazing' Jurassic monster belong to a previously unknown species.

This marine reptile, which lived in prehistoric oceans about 183 million years ago, is called Plesionectes longicollum, which translates to “long-necked almost swimmer.”

P. longicollum is a type of plesiosauroidea, an extinct group of long-necked, predatory marine reptiles that inhabited Earth's oceans during the era when dinosaurs dominated the land. This specimen lived during the early Toarcian age (183–174 million years ago) at the beginning of the Jurassic period.
