People were left shocked yesterday when a newborn baby was thrown out of a hotel window in France, with screams echoing through the neighbourhood.

Local residents were alerted to the incident after hearing a noise at around 6am on Monday and called emergency services. The baby was thrown from the second floor of the three-star Ibis Style hotel on Rue de la Croix Saint-Simon in the 20th arrondissement of Paris.

Police and ambulance crews rushed to the scene and the child was rushed to hospital. Below we look at everything we know so far about the incident that has shocked France.

Who is the mother of this baby?

The baby was reportedly born to an 18-year-old American woman who was in the country with others. The infant was rushed to the Robert-Debré hospital, but despite the best efforts of medical staff, the child did not survive, according to information provided to Le Parisien by the Paris prosecutor's office.

Why was she in France?

The teenager was said to have been in Paris on a study trip from the US with other students when she suddenly went into labour. The Paris prosecutor's office and officers from the Brigade for the Protection of Minors (BPM) of the Paris judicial police arrived at the scene, according to a police source.

The prosecutor's office said the teenager “is part of a group of young people travelling around Europe,” adding that she was taken to hospital for surgery after giving birth. The Paris prosecutor's office also said: “She was arrested at the scene. The possibility of denying the pregnancy is being considered.”

The prosecutor's office confirmed that a case had been opened on the fact of “the murder of a minor under the age of 15.”

The baby still had the umbilical cord

Horribly, witnesses claim the tiny baby still had its umbilical cord attached when it was thrown out of a hotel window in France. A source close to the investigation told Paris Match: “The investigation is ongoing and the exact circumstances of this tragedy are yet to be clarified… We don't know yet if this is a case of pregnancy denial.”

According to a police source, a judge from the Paris prosecutor's office and police officers from the Brigade for the Protection of Minors (BPM) of the Paris judicial police arrived at the scene.
