Man rams car into church before claiming he was ‘possessed’ and only safe by altar

The driver forced his way through the front doors and crashed the benches until he made a stop in front of the altar inside the Catholic church

A "possessed" driver has rammed his car into a church, crashing into the pews before stopping in front the altar.

Video shared on social media reveals the aftermath of the bizarre incident as the black Jeep parks in the centre of San Juan Evangelista Church in Toledo, Spain.

Local police Mariano Perea told Spanish News Agency Efe that the man is believed to be a local in the town and that he could break through the church door the first time.

A female eyewitness went to the car to check on the driver because she thought he had had an accident but he apparently lowered his window and scared her away by shouting at her.

The woman then reportedly called the emergency services while the driver continued ramming into the church door until he broke through it and drove into the building.

The doors were split in half and a number of benches were left broken.

Spanish Civil Guard agents reportedly found the man visibly disturbed next to the altar, where he claimed he was possessed by the devil and would only feel safe there.

The man has been put under doctor's observation pending the results from the alcohol and drug test.

Luckily no one was injured in the incident.

According to local authorities, the case is being investigated and the driver might be arrested in the following days.

The driver is reportedly the owner of a shop specialised in products related to the cultivation and use of cannabis which is located some 800 metres away from the church.
