Wife gives birth next to dying husband after vicious thugs stab him to death on way to hospital

Talent Gono, 34, was stabbed multiple times in the head and chest while his pregnant wife Lillian, 33, watched in horror. The horrific event was so shocking that it caused her to go into premature labour and become a mother next to her dead partner's body in Cape Town, South Africa.

A husband who was taking his pregnant wife to the hospital was attacked by bandits, which caused her shock, which led to her giving birth.

Panicked, Lillian Gono, 33, and her husband Talent, 34, were ambushed as they left their home. He was brutally beaten and stabbed in the chest and head. The gang of eight attacked him in Cape Town, South Africa, as he carried his wife's bags to an Uber to take them to a hospital. The shock of seeing her husband's bloody body caused her waters to break, and she gave birth to a daughter just minutes before he took his last breath.

The locals of Joe Slovo village were too scared to come out of their homes to help her, so she was left alone, cradling her newborn baby. Welder Talent had been saving for three years and had just saved enough to start a new life in their native Zimbabwe, where they planned to leave in April.

British wildlife artist Carol Cook, who knew the couple, sold her painting to support them, helping to cover the cost of equipment to start a welding business. Now Lillian is left alone to care for her five-year-old daughter Mia and the new baby girl she named after her father Talent while South African police hunt for the killers. To save money, Lillian worked as a maid, and her employer, Jeannie Ross, set up a Back a Buddy campaign to raise money for the funeral.

Ginny said: “I received a voicemail from Lillian, who was in shock and tears, saying she had left in an Uber with Talent. A group of thugs had attacked him in the dark, beating him mercilessly and stabbing him in the head, stomach and chest, leaving him lying in a pool of blood.

“Lilian tried to help but was overcome with terrible pain as contractions began and, lying next to her dying husband, she gave birth to a baby girl. Their baby's first cry came the night he took his last breath. Now Lillian faces the unimaginable task of raising two children without the man who has been their rock, so I am trying to raise funds to help.” The fundraiser to support Lillian and her two young daughters can be found here.

Tony Tresadern, 68, a family friend and director of a children's charity, said: “What happened was absolutely horrific. He was beaten with a blunt object and then stabbed repeatedly and while he was dying his wife gave birth on the floor next to him. Talent died seconds after being born.

“The bandits ran away laughing and looking back. They took a life for an old phone and a baby bag that Lillian had to take to the hospital. She lay alone in the road with her newborn baby next to her dead husband, as everyone was too scared to get out until the ambulance arrived.”

South African police spokesman Warrant Officer Joseph Swartbooi said officers attended a medical clinic where they found the body. He said: “Medical staff confirmed the deceased was dead from stab wounds at the scene and unknown suspects have fled and are being sought. The motive for this attack is robbery and it is being treated as murder.”
