The mosaic depicting fighting Cupids dates back to the third century BC and may be associated with Dionysus, the patron deity of the ancient city of Teos.

Situated on the western coast of Turkey, the city of Teos was a thriving centre that occupied an important place in the Hellenistic and Roman worlds. During the Roman era, Teos was renowned for its wine production and theatrical culture. However, by the third century AD, its influence began to wane and the city was soon abandoned.
There had never been any modern construction at the site, so when archaeologists from the University of Pennsylvania began excavating the site in 2021, they found much of Teos to be remarkably well preserved. The team focused on the bouleuterion, the city council building and center of democratic governance. After five years of excavation, the researchers developed a detailed timeline of the construction and renovations that took place at the site over the centuries.
