Fishing is a favorite pastime for many, whether it's a weekend hobby or a full-time job. The thrill of patiently waiting for a bite on the beach or river bank and the satisfaction of catching a big fish is what makes this activity so appealing.

However, any experienced angler will tell you about the disappointment you experience when you think you have caught a fish, but instead you pull out only a lump of seaweed.

A fisherman recently had a similar, but far more terrifying experience at a popular resort. He thought he had caught a fish, but recoiled in horror when he saw what he had actually pulled from the depths.

An unnamed fisherman was trying his luck at the La Termica breakwater in Malaga, Spain, when he got an unpleasant surprise. Instead of a fish, he caught a large rat.

The rodent took the bait as the fisherman was preparing another line at the barrier on Misericordia beach, a favourite spot for surf fishing enthusiasts.

A shocking video of the incident has emerged on social media, showing the rat wriggling and wagging its tail as it tries to free itself from the hook. The clip has already been viewed more than half a million times since Sunday (September 7).

Social media users who responded to the video said the rodents are often found around Malaga's breakwaters, so they were not particularly shocked to see a fisherman accidentally hook one.

Some expressed pity for the creature, while others took the situation lightly, suggesting that the fisherman had discovered a new species of aquatic animal, dubbed the “ratfish.”

In comments translated from Spanish, one user noted: “The breakwaters in Malaga are full of rats – fishing without fish swimming by is an odyssey.”

Another remarked: “Good bait.”

A third wrote: “Now they're even underwater.”

Someone else asked, “What bait did you use to catch that fish?”

However, one compassionate person added: “What a shame, poor little animal.”
