Bible news: Richard Dawkins sparked outrage with ‘Jesus would be atheist’ claim

RICHARD DAWKINS sparked outrage after claiming “Jesus would have been an atheist” during an interview eight years ago.

Mr Dawkins is infamous for being an outspoken atheist and is well-known for his criticism of creationism and intelligent design. The author of best-selling titles such as “The Selfish Game” and “The God Delusion” was invited on John Harris’ national conversation podcast to discuss the politics of religion. Mr Dawkins insisted that even Jesus would have flown the flag for atheism if he was alive today, having been exposed to modern science.

During the half-an-hour-long debate, the pair left no stone unturned, with Mr Dawkins insisting the religious leader was merely a moral teacher.

Discussing the fundamentals of religion, he claimed in 2011: “I think these are moral beliefs that one would arrive at by moral philosophic discussions.

“I have described myself as a cultural Christian.

“I wrote an article called ‘atheists for Jesus’ and somebody gave me a t-shirt with the slogan on.

Somebody as intelligent as Jesus would have been an atheist

“The point was that Jesus was a great moral teacher and I was suggesting somebody as intelligent as Jesus would have been an atheist if he had known what we know today.”

Mr Dawkins then went on to claim that as science develops, the proof of God will dwindle.

He added: “The space for positive demonstration [that God exists] is shrinking and there is no positive evidence.

“We’ve all got to be agnostic about anything that someone could imagine because you can’t actually disprove it.

“In the God delusion, I made a seven-point scale, one was total conviction there is a God and seven was that there isn’t.

“I put myself as a six, that’s agnostic, but veering towards atheist.

“I would be a six with respect to fairies and pixies and werewolves.”

The clip was later shared on YouTube by The Guardian, where it has since racked up more than two million views.

The comment section was full of rage.

One read: “Mr Dawkins, how dare you say Jesus would be an atheist, he said ‘if you have seen me, you have seen the father.’”

Another added: “Science is corrupt, Dawkins is a narcissist driven by his own arrogance – God is good, all of the time.”

And a third claimed: “Religion gives us a purpose, a reason to go on, and a promise of an afterlife.

“It sounds like Dawkins’ arguments are based on one oxymoron after another.

“Dawkins’ words indisputably would be considered the ravings of a madman by those people who lives were defined by honesty and integrity.”
