A new study shows that scientists have found evidence of gold and other precious metals coming from the Earth's core.
Vast quantities (99.9%) of gold and other precious metals are found in the center of our planet, and between these natural riches and us there are thousands of miles of nearly impenetrable rock. However, while it is unlikely that humanity will ever be able to reach the Earth's core, recent research suggests that some metals have migrated from the core into enriched rock that eventually made it to the surface.
While studying volcanic rocks in Hawaii, a team of scientists found traces of the precious metal ruthenium (a platinum group metal) that they believe could only have come from the core-mantle boundary, more than 1,800 miles (2,900 km) below the surface.
