Brainteasers are great ways to stimulate the mind and give the brain some neurological exercise. The three main types of brainteasers are observational, analytical, and mathematical.

Mathematical brainteasers come in the form of tricky maths-based puzzles whilst analytical brainteasers are complex written riddles.

In both cases, the user has to solve the problems as quickly as possible.

Observational brainteasers, such as the one above from Spin Genie UK, begin with a complex image. Within that image, users have to spot the anomaly or anomalies.

In this case, the goal of this brainteaser is to spot the five sandcastles hidden in this regular beach scene. The key to solving this brainteaser is to carefully scan the image from top to bottom to identify the sandcastles as quickly as possible.

Did you spot the sandcastles in under 15 seconds? No worries if not, the answers are highlighted above. The sandcastles are dotted all over the graphic next to people, under trees or near seaside paraphernalia such as spades and surfboards.

Brainteasers such as this one are great for giving the brain some much-needed neurological stimulation, helping to exercise it like jogging or swimming can help the muscles in the arms and legs.

This exercise could help contribute to the brain’s health and the healthier the mind is the less likely someone may be to develop a degenerative neurological condition.

This doesn’t mean that brainteasers will stop someone from developing dementia, other conditions can have a much greater impact, but they could help keep someone’s mind sharper for longer.

Dementia is one of the most devastating conditions in the UK and every year thousands of families are affected by the conditions. Whilst there is as yet no cure for the disease, new treatments are starting to make their way through.

Earlier this year, scientists announced a revolutionary new jab that was designed to remove toxic proteins from the brain because they cause damage that leads to Alzheimer’s, the most common form of dementia.

Although the new treatment is still in its early stages, scientists are optimistic about its potential. Alzheimer’s expert at Cambridge University Dr Shahid Zaman said: “We finally have something that targets the amyloid protein and clears it. We can be very optimistic this vaccine will prevent or delay the onset of Alzheimer’s.

“Alzheimer’s can take decades of time before symptoms appear due to a build-up of damage. For over a decade drug companies have put millions of pounds into drugs to target the amyloid plaques in the brain, but previous drugs have been shown to have awful side effects including brain bleeds. While this vaccine still has some side effects they are far less. I am very excited.”
