New crackdown on Fire TV Stick will stop UK residents from streaming sports and movies

UK authorities are continuing to implement a major crackdown on illegal streaming via Fire TV Sticks.

Streaming content without an official provider continues to gain popularity, and for good reason. People in the UK can buy so-called “shady” Fire TV Sticks online and get instant access to sports and movies without having to pay high fees. With the cost of living crisis still putting pressure on budgets, it’s no surprise that many are choosing this way of watching TV, although it comes with its own risks.

The FACT team recently warned that users of illegal streaming devices “could face serious consequences”. The warning comes after recent large-scale operations across the UK.

Over two weeks of raids, more than 30 vendors selling pre-installed Fire TV Sticks were targeted. All of these vendors have now been ordered to immediately stop selling the devices or face further action. This means fewer of these devices will be on the market, and fewer homes will be able to buy them.

A 42-year-old man from Newport was also arrested and a number of television gadgets were also confiscated for forensic examination.

FACT also confirmed that numerous content removal requests have been sent to social media and online platforms, which the organisation hopes will help in the further fight against illegal IPTV activity.

Courts are increasingly imposing harsh penalties for illegal streaming, particularly for those who ignore warnings. Last month, a private prosecution brought by the Premier League resulted in Jonathan Edge, a 29-year-old Liverpool native, receiving three years and four months in prison for selling and using illegal Firesticks.

Discussing the new measures, FACT CEO Kieron Sharp said: “Our cease and desist measures are not just warnings, they are the first step in holding offenders accountable. Many who have ignored these notices in the past are now facing arrest and criminal charges. We strongly encourage anyone involved in these activities to stop immediately.”

“If you supply or use illegal streaming devices or illegal IPTV subscriptions, please take this as a clear warning: you are breaking the law and risk facing serious consequences.

“We will continue to work with the police to monitor and disrupt these illegal operations. Police forces across the UK are working hard to tackle this crime and we are grateful for their assistance.

“For those using illegal streaming services, please remember that you are not just committing a crime; you are putting yourself at risk. These services often expose users to malware, fraud, and data theft, leaving no recourse if something goes wrong. The safest, smartest, and only choice is to stick to legal providers for your entertainment.”

What are suspicious Fire TV Sticks?

These “smart” devices have become increasingly popular in recent years, offering an easy way to access premium content without high subscription fees.

Most of them come with pre-installed access to illegal movies and sports, which you can then watch for a small monthly or annual fee. This sounds appealing, but there are serious caveats associated with it.

While it is unlikely that consumers will ever face prosecution or imprisonment, this way of watching television can expose them to the risk of malware infections, as well as displaying unprotected content that may be inappropriate for young children.
