New Freeview rival hits UK homes and could spell the end of your TV aerial

TV aerials could become history as the UK sees a rise in the number of TVs with broadband internet access.

Millions of UK households still rely on Freeview for their entertainment, and for good reason. Unlike services like Sky and Virgin Media, Freeview is completely free to watch, with no monthly fees or long-term contracts. It’s still a popular platform, but a new service could end up taking Freeview’s crown.

Freely launched last year and allows homes to tune into more than 50 live channels – plus access to a host of on-demand content – via a broadband connection rather than a traditional antenna. With everything built into the TV, it’s similar to the Sky Glass smart TV, which also operates using the internet rather than an over-the-air signal.

Freely is actually owned by the same team as Freeview and is ideal for users who can't or don't want to install a rooftop aerial.

UK Sky rival gets major upgrade, continues to offer free TV

Other features include the ability to pause live TV for 15 minutes, get full content recommendations, and browse current and upcoming shows with the main and mini TV guide.

It's a smart system that only requires a basic broadband connection to operate, so it's super easy to set up and get going.

The only real issue with upgrading to Freely is that you need a compatible TV, as stock screens can't be upgraded. At launch, there were only a few models with Freely built in, but that's changing quickly.

More and more manufacturers, including Toshiba, Hisense, Panasonic and Sharp, are starting to support Freely, and another tech company recently joined the list.

Metz has just confirmed that it is launching Freely-enabled TVs, all of which feature QLED screens, Dolby Atmos and full smart functionality with easy access to apps like Netflix, Disney+ and iPlayer. To reduce eye strain, METZ Eye Care technology also allows you to enjoy your boxsets for longer.

The new range includes a 65in model priced at £659, followed by smaller 55in (£489) and 50in (£429) models, all of which will be available in Euronics stores across the UK.

For those looking for something more compact, a 43-inch version will be available from April, costing £379.

Speaking about the launch, Rob Peacock of METZ UK said: “As one of Europe’s oldest consumer electronics and TV manufacturers, we pride ourselves on being able to offer premium design and cutting-edge technology – all at an affordable price.

“We have now decided to offer a five-year warranty on these models to demonstrate how confident we are in the quality of our products.”
