Scientists have created a new four-legged robot that, in theory, can outrun the fastest humans.

The robot, dubbed Black Panther 2.0, is a joint development between robotics startup Mirror Me and the Center for Interdisciplinary Mechanics at Zhejiang University in China, according to state-run Xinhua News Agency.

The robot weighs 84 pounds (38 kilograms) and stands 2.1 feet (0.63 meters) tall; it can run 100 meters in under 10 seconds. In the video, the team claims that it reaches a top speed of 10.4 meters per second (23.3 miles per hour), which is slightly slower than the world record of 10.44 m/s set by Usain Bolt at the 2009 World Athletics Championships.

To achieve such speeds, the researchers equipped the robot with flexible knee-like joints on all four legs and incorporated carbon fiber reinforced structures to maintain their strength under the weight of the robot moving at top speed.

According to Xinhua, Black Panther 2.0 uses artificial intelligence (AI), including machine learning, to adapt its movements to its environment.

It’s unclear how exactly the robot’s speed is planned to be used. Other quadruped robots, such as the DEEP Robotics Lynx, have been proposed for security and danger zone surveys, but their top speed is only 4.9 m/s (11 mph) — less than half that of Black Panther 2.0.

In 2012, Boston Dynamics demonstrated a speed of 12.6 m/s (28.3 mph) for its cheetah robot. However, this was a significantly larger and heavier device that was not brought to market.

Live Science reached out to the principal investigator of the Black Panther 2.0 project at Zhejiang University, but had not received a response by the time of publication.
