Baggage policy 'rarely enforced' sparks anger among passengers after latest incident

Video: Airline Passengers Share What Happens When You Spot 'SSSS' On Your Boarding Pass

Two Arizona travelers told Fox News Digital about the four letters “SSSS” that could appear on your airline ticket.

A passenger who boarded an overnight flight from Atlanta, Georgia, expressed his displeasure over the actions of some other passengers regarding his luggage.

Posting on Reddit's r/delta forum with the title “Another rant about carry-ons and personal items,” the user wrote: “Seriously, why have a 'rule' of one carry-on and one personal item if it's almost never followed.”

The user added: “I watched a man with two, what I thought were large, wheeled bags and no personal items place both suitcases on the overhead bin and the flight attendant just watched.”

The user then added: “[Since] I paid to check my bag, I decided to place the backpack above my seat and the same FA [then] told me I couldn't do that.”

The man continued: “I told the FA that I had just seen someone put two suitcases on the rack and why that was acceptable. The FA ignored me and walked away.”

The user reported that the flight attendant then placed the bag under the seat in front.

Reddit users are taking to the comments section to share their guesses about the actions of the two-suitcase traveler and his luggage habits.

“Just from personal experience, one time when I was approaching my seat I was asked about my two suitcases with wheels and a backpack,” said one user.

“I carry my mom's luggage when she gets on a plane because she can't. [So] it's entirely possible that [this person] was doing the same thing.”

“Maybe you shouldn't try to control others and [instead] put your personal item under the seat in front of you where it [belongs],” one sarcastic user commented. (iStock)

Another user pointed out other problems: “Let's discuss the real problem: baggage fees. This is why everyone now takes carry-on luggage. This in turn makes boarding and disembarking much longer.”

Another person said: “Airlines should start being more lenient with checked baggage and charging for carry-on luggage. That would solve a few issues.”

One Reddit user added: “I stopped traveling with a backpack because I was tired of sacrificing legroom to demanding flight attendants who say backpacks can't be put under the seat (even though it was often my only carry-on item).”

One wry user wrote to the author of the post: “Maybe you shouldn't try to control others, but [instead] put your personal belongings under the seat in front of you where they [belong]?”

A former flight attendant and etiquette expert told Fox News Digital that the flight attendant in question may have been mistaken. (iStock)

“I am a flight crew member who frequently travels as a passenger on commercial flights,” one user said.

The man continued, “The usual rule is that unless I am in uniform, I am not allowed to carry more than the standard baggage allowance for any passenger, whether he is a member of the crew or not.”

“If the flight is not fully booked, this rule is often ignored.”

Another Reddit user wrote: “If I only have one item it's my carry-on, no matter the size, and I'll definitely put it in the overhead bin, not under the seat.
