A 28-year-old man found himself in a row with his father after asking for takeout at a restaurant, sparking a debate among Reddit users and becoming the topic of a wider discussion about etiquette.
In his post, the man said the argument began when his family went out to dine at his father's expense.
“I ordered a main course but wanted a side dish so I added it to my order,” a Reddit user shared.
“My eyes were bigger than my stomach because I couldn't finish my meal. I asked for a takeaway box.”
However, his father was unhappy with the decision, a Reddit user reported.

Soon after, his father told him that his actions were “rude” and that “when someone else is paying for your food, you shouldn't order extra dishes if you can't handle them,” the man wrote.
The man added that his father “wishes him well” and tried to explain the situation to him, but he did not take the advice well.
“They had a row and I offered to give him the money back if it bothered him so much, but he said I didn't get the point,” he recalls.
“I didn't think it was so ridiculous to get takeout. Am I stupid?”

Many supported the father.
“If someone else is paying, don't order too much, it's just rude,” one commenter wrote. “I wouldn't like that either. Be a little more careful next time.”
“[My] nephew did this all the time until I put a stop to it,” wrote another. “It's inappropriate when someone else is paying.”
A third added: “I have a grandson who does this. He orders a huge amount of food, takes a few bites and leaves the rest… It's rude and wasteful.”

However, some supported the original Reddit post's author, claiming that the father was too strict.
“What father doesn't want to feed his child?” one wrote. “He's a terrible person and I wouldn't go with him anymore.”
“It's easy to order more than you need if you're hungry or don't know what portions are on offer,” another said. “You apologized and offered to pay. That should have been the end of it.”
Texas etiquette expert Pat Durham told Fox News Digital that both sides got it wrong in the situation.
“When we're at someone's place and someone else is paying for our food, we should be respectful of the host and their finances,” Durham said.
“In this situation, ordering an extra side dish was inappropriate.”

However, the father “didn’t handle the situation properly either,” the etiquette expert added.
