Man mocked for calling police on stranger dressed in yellow

Sorry, this video is no longer available.

Social media users are mocking a man who called the police on a stranger in yellow in Northern Ireland.

Footage taken from a drive-by shows a man wearing a long, heavy yellow coat, yellow trousers and yellow boots walking along a road at night in the Kilrea area of County Derry.

The man was also reported to be wearing a white mask and a black wig, although they are not visible in the December 27 video.

“Excuse me, mate, excuse me, sir, what are you doing?” Gerard McFerran shouted from the window. “What's going on here? Why are you wearing a mask and all that?”

He added: “You have some explaining to do. This is absolutely wrong… Why are you in this city? Tell me why are you here?”

The “yellow man” explained that he was trying to get back to his friend after traveling on a train that day.

However, this did not seem to satisfy McFerran, who responded: “We'll call the police on you, okay?”

There have also been reports of sightings in the Rasharkin and Danloi areas.

Police said: “We take all reports extremely seriously and I hope the visibility of our officers today, as well as our dedication to continuing to patrol public areas, will provide reassurance and build confidence that we are committed to doing everything we can to keep areas safe.”

“If you are outside your home and notice anything suspicious or are concerned about the welfare of a person, please report your concerns.”

There was no evidence of a crime and the story has sparked ridicule on social media.

In response to the initial posts on Belfast Live, a user named Ghost of Sid Vicious said: “Headline should be: 'Man out for a night out being accosted by paranoid weirdo Gerard McFerran'.”

One Reddit user wrote: “What's so scary about a man in yellow walking down the road? Watched the clip. Maybe the guy just likes the color yellow and was walking home from a party and was cold.”

Another noted: “From the video it looks like someone in a raincoat… Doesn't look like he's doing much damage.”

Joe Soap wrote in his article on the X website: “I heard he was simply lost and heading to the old Lammas Fair in Ballycastle.”

Peter added: “And then he gets shot down by a submarine.”

Liam O'Grady said: “There's some kind of fetish in there somewhere, but I'll be damned if I can name it.”

Discussing the incident on TikTok, a user named Costa noted: “Maybe he's looking for his yellow woman.”

“Just be careful because the yellow man might be walking next to you and it's up to you whether to give him a ride home or not.”

Explaining his version of events to Belfast Live, McFerran said: “I was driving down Vow Road when I saw a man dressed all in yellow and I thought it was quite strange.”

“I asked him why he was dressed like that, but he hardly paid any attention to me and just kept walking.

“He just said 'it wasn't him', that he couldn't take his mask off and that he was staying with a friend when he came here by train.

“It was all very strange and completely pointless.”
