Whether friends or foes, passengers may be unsure who to trust when it comes to seat encroachment on an airplane.

One passenger flying from Chicago to New York shared a story about a “seat thief” on Reddit.

On the r/delta forum, a user said he went into an Irish bar at Chicago's Midway International Airport for a drink and struck up a conversation with another patron.

“I joked with the guy next to me about his old-fashioned style, to which he rolled his eyes and acknowledged it, also showing his $30 bill for the unfortunate drink. He went to the lounge after receiving the notice,” the author wrote.

The user reported that he and his wife were transferred to first grade.

“I got on the plane and my friend from the bar was sitting in our seat. I showed him my ticket and he moved over. I said, 'No, sorry, we have both seats.' He mumbled something and moved back to the front row, 'comfort plus,'” the author wrote in his post.

“He wasn't rude, but it was super awkward. I was like, 'Bro, I thought we were friends,'” the author of the post concluded.

Reddit users discussed the situation in the comments.

“You are not friends. He is stealing places. Don't call this thief a friend,” one harsh user commented.

Another user added: “It amazes me how people think they can get into a completely different class of service.”

“I'm sure this isn't his first time. People do it because they know they can get away with it and worst case scenario they have to go back to their jobs,” one Reddit user noted.

“Looks like our guy was a little drunk. Surprised he made it on board,” wrote another.

“The world is small,” one user commented.

“How can you steal seats when you know you just have to show him it's not his seat and tell him to move? This is insane,” added one user.

“I don't understand why these people think flight attendants won't notice someone in the front row who isn't supposed to be there,” said another.

Brandon Blewett, a Texas-based author of “How to Avoid Strangers on Planes,” told Fox News Digital that he's seeing more people encountering people taking up seats on planes.

“Let the flight attendant handle it. No one wants to be the star of a viral video called 'Passenger Falling at 30,000 Feet,'” Blewitt advised.
