NASA’s Curiosity rover has beamed back stunning images of what looks like a piece of coral on the Red Planet.
The unusual object is actually a small, light-colored, weathered rock that Curiosity discovered in Gale Crater on July 24. However, it bears a striking resemblance to the reef-building creatures found in Earth’s oceans.
A black-and-white image taken using the Curiosity rover’s Remote Micro Imager (a high-resolution camera mounted on the rover) that NASA released on August 4 shows a rock about 1 inch (2.5 centimeters) wide with intricate branches.
