One Reddit user believes he spotted a face turned towards him in a Google Earth image from Antarctica.

A satellite image posted on r/strangeearth shows a half-closed eye, nose, and distorted mouth in the snow and ice.

Some Reddit users were quick to draw parallels with Megatron, the main villain of the famous Transformers franchise.

You can find it yourself by entering the coordinates 72°00'52″S 168°35'37″E.

This is not the first time that Antarctica has attracted the attention of Google Earth users with its unusual contents. Previously, users assumed they had found a huge door, while some believed it to be an “alien pyramid” half-buried in snow.

Interestingly, the person mentioned on Reddit had actually appeared on the same site earlier in 2019.

A ufologist suggested that this could be evidence of aliens visiting Earth, while conspiracy theorists believe that these are artifacts of an ancient civilization.

Blake Cousins, host of the Thirdphaseofmoon YouTube channel, said: “It looks like a huge ancient structure that resembles a face first discovered on Google Earth.”

“I agree that what we see looks like some kind of megastructure.”

However, some Reddit users believe that it is simply a natural formation created by snow and ice, with some simply commenting on it as “pareidolia.”

Pareidolia is a psychological phenomenon in which our brains recognize objects, patterns, or meanings where there are none.

People are particularly prone to seeing faces and figures, and there are several theories about why this happens.

Adam Weitz, a professor and psychologist at Northwestern University in Illinois, has spent years studying the possible causes of anthropomorphism.

In an interview with Metro last year, he partly explained this by saying that the “I” is very accessible to us and represents a prototypical person.

He also added that we need to make sense of the world or objects, and often we do this by “identifying them with something familiar – a person.”
